When the sun is shining, and you’re in a good mood, the last thing you’ll probably want to do is head down to the stuffy and overcrowded gym. The good news is you don’t have to let your fitness suffer. Instead, you could head to the beach! There are a ton of great activities you can do that are fun, burn loads of calories and allow you to get out there and enjoy the gorgeous weather. Here are just a few of them.
Go For A Run
If you’re already very physically fit and can run easily, running on sand is a great way to challenge yourself. Since the surface is unstable, your legs have to work harder to stay balanced, and it’s an incredible cardiovascular workout. With the waves lapping against the shore, the cool breeze and the sun shining, it certainly beats running on the treadmill at the gym!
Go on a Hike
Another challenging workout and one that allows you to make the most of your surroundings is hiking. Many coastlines have caves and mountains nearby, you could lace up your walking shoes and spend the day exploring- you could even bring your dog! If you’re going to be out for most of the day you will need some supplies- food, water, a map and a first aid kit are sensible. Bring a camera too for any photo opportunities, you’re sure to see some epic sights. A good hiking backpack is essential, the Teton Scout, for example, is budget friendly without compromising on quality. You’ll get an all over body workout while getting to enjoy the fresh air and views.
Yoga is a fantastic way to keep your body strong and supple, it also allows you to master breathing techniques that calm your mind and promote a good sense of wellbeing. It’s a useful activity to fit into your exercise regime and can be practiced on ‘rest days’ since it’s low impact and won’t leave you out of breath. Yoga at the beach is a fantastic way to warm up or down or just an ideal workout. If you go early in the morning, you’ll catch a breathtaking sunrise from the ocean.
Exercise in The Water
The sea offers endless opportunities for fun and fitness. Grab a surfboard and hit the waves (or just lie down paddle with your arms if you’re not a pro!) Either way will give you a great cardio workout but without having to clock watch. You could swim in the sea or even go scuba diving or jet skiing- if your local beach is popular with tourists there are probably lots of places nearby where you can book lessons or hire equipment. Sea water is excellent for the skin, it can reduce acne-causing bacteria and cleanse pores. The perfect way to cool off after a workout.
