Don’t get the wrong idea here, we love theme parks. We love Disney, Universal, Six Flags, Aquatica and many more – we adore them all, and we’re sure you do too. But, there’s no denying the cost. Let’s face it, theme parks are expensive and a four day trip to Disney will cost roughly four thousand for the whole family. That doesn’t include the souvenirs that you just can’t resist buying. Now, places like Disney World are well worth the cost and provide a truly magical experience, but there are alternatives you can consider instead. Adventures with kids that perhaps cost a little less and that don’t require you traveling to a different state or country? Actually, there are, and we think you’ll love some of these ideas.
Back To Basics
Rather than booking an expensive trip at the Wilderness Lodge in Disney World, why not think about heading out into the actual wilderness? You can go camping with the kids and show them what roughing it is really like. We’re not talking about log cabins or deluxe hotels here. Instead, pick a spot in the woods or the open grass plain. If you buy a tent make sure that you air it out before you take it away. Otherwise, you can end up with a rather musky smell. Particularly, if it’s been at the back of the attic unused for a few years.
Once you have tested the tent for any leaks, it’s time to pick a spot. You’ll probably find a great place to go camping just a few miles from where you live, and that means you can keep travel costs under control.
As for activities, how about fishing, water skiing or even wild swimming. All these possibilities and many more are available at a lot of camping sites across the country.
If you are heading to Disney World this year, you and your kids can head to Epcot and play detective with Perry the Platypus. Check out this video for a guide:

However, this is definitely for the little ones, and if you have older kids, you might want something more challenging. For that, you should try Escape Room. Available in various international locations Escape room is a fantastic adventure for kids and adults alike. While it won’t fill a few days, you can go back as much as you like trying different themes and difficulty levels.
A City Break
Or finally, you could think about heading to the city with the kids this year rather than a theme park tourist hot spot. This is perfect for a more mature getaway with lots of great activities available for older children. You could take them to see a real stage show or perhaps even an art museum. Younger kids often need the thrills and bright colors of the theme parks to keep them entertained, but older children might love to see a real theatre show or explore true works of art.
These are just some of the awesome alternatives you can consider if you want a break from the theme parks and indeed, the cost.
