Some of us look forward to a long road trip, while others think of it as the bane of their existence and treat it as a necessary evil. Whichever way you look at it, a long journey in the car can be a big test of your focus, resilience, and sanity. And when you are embarking on a long journey, there is always the point where you hit the wall, either emotionally or you are just plain tired, and everything gets to you. There are some simple things to keep your sanity at a reasonable level during a long journey, and here are a few.
Make Your Journey As Comfortable As Possible
Comfort can be a dangerous thing for some drivers, has the more comfortable the vehicle, the more relaxed you get, and therefore the less you focus on the road. On the other side of the coin, you need to make sure that your car is up to the challenge, has passed its checks, and is going to survive the long journey. It’s at this point that you may want to think about renting a vehicle, and there are plenty of car rental companies to choose from, such as Legacy Car Rental, but beware that they are comfortable and the newer the car, usually the higher the cost to rent it. But if you’ve got a car that’s not going to make the distance, you’re better off making sure that you have a safe and reliable car that will make your journey comfortable but also give you peace of mind. Y’know, just in case you have concerns about breaking down in the middle of a desert road miles away from any gas station or mechanic.
Stay Away From Junk Food
We’ve all been there, the exciting prospect of a long road trip means we can stock up on all of our favorite sugary treats. However, this isn’t the best thing for any driver. The typical chocolates and soda drinks are going to make you peak and trough as your blood sugar spikes and lowers, which will make you tire very easily. Your best options are to pick healthy snacks that will keep you fuller for longer; there are plenty of nuts and all these paleo bars making the rounds now. It’s never been easier to be healthier while on the move, so it is in your best interests to keep your focus, sugar is not going to achieve that in any way, shape, or form.
Don’t Just Listen To The Sat Nav
We seldom prepare our journeys anymore, we’re putting the destination into the GPS or sat nav and follow that. However, when was the last time the software was updated? Is it going to take you around the houses to get your destination, or is it going to do what you expect it to, and provide you with the quickest route? You know the feeling of panic that sets in when that voice tells you to turn around, so why don’t you get a good idea of the route before you get in the car? Plan the journey on Google Maps and check the routes on your GPS before your journey and see if they sync up.
Any major road journey is a vast cornucopia of emotions, and we all want to get to our destination as safely and as quickly as possible, so think about your sanity and prepare before your journey.
