Tips for Saving Money on a Cancun Beach Vacation

What comes to mind when you hear the name “Cancun”? Holidays in Cancun are known for vibrant bars, sumptuous cuisine, beautiful scenery, and other things that will definitely spice up your summer vacation. However, costs can really ad up when you’re headed to a popular tourist mecca. Here are a few great tips help you enjoy all that Cancun has to offer without breaking the bank.

Travel Times

First and foremost, pick your travel dates wisely. Avoid peak holidays, such as Spring Break, and try to travel midweek, when fares are generally lower.

Choose a Vacation Rental

One of the best ways to save money while on vacation is to rent a vacation home instead of staying at a hotel. If you use a site such as Vacation Rentals by Owner (VROB.com) you will save by avoiding an agency fee. You can bring your own food, and choose to cook your own meals, or go out to a restaurant when the mood (and the budget) is right. Many groceries items are over-priced in tourist destinations, even at discount stores, so it pays to bring basics such as bottled water, cereal, drink boxes and packaged snacks from home. If you’re being to do any travelling by car, be sure to stock up on some road trip snacks, such as soft drinks, candy, and water. Gas station snacks are notoriously expensive.

Bring your Own

One of the biggest budget busters while on vacation is visiting all the tempting little seaside shops selling everything you could possibly need or want. Do some planning in advance, and bring your own beach toys, towels, and other little trappings such as suntan lotion, hats, and sunglasses. If you’re travelling with kids, buy some water toys at home, keep them hidden until you get to your destination, and it will still seem like a vacation treat.

Free or Cheap Activities

Some of Cancun’s most under-appreciated, and affordable activities are cultural ones, such as the Mayan ruins in Tulum, vast tracts of wilderness, and marine sights. For nothing or next to nothing, you can swim with dolphins, take a Hummer tour, or visit a turtle farm. Along with sunning and swimming, you’ll find enough to do in Cancun that will leave you with plenty of memories in your heart, and, hopefully, some money in your wallet.

So what’s the bottom line for saving money on a beach vacation? Save where you can on everyday items in order to give yourself some leeway to splurge on the spectacular sights and sounds of Cancun: restaurants, night clubs, and an endless array of activities to enjoy on the stunning beaches and crystal blue water. You work hard for your vacation; enjoy it to the fullest!
